Ulsan Technopark announced on Oct. 19 that it attended a Korea-Japan special joint session at the 'Global Offshore Wind Summit Japan 2026' held recently in Nagasaki, Japan, where it presented the potential of Ulsan's floating offshore wind industry and the direction of commercialisation through demonstration projects.

The event was jointly hosted by the Japan Wind Power Association (JWPA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) as part of an international offshore wind conference.

At the Korea-Japan joint special session co-hosted by Energy and Space, the Offshore Energy Industry Forum, and JWPA, strategies from demonstration through commercialisation to global market entry for floating offshore wind were discussed, along with measures for industrial cooperation between the two countries and supply chain expansion.

The panel discussion included Lee Han-woo, head of Ulsan Technopark's Energy Technology Support Division, along with representatives from Energy and Space, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Doosan Enerbility, Daesang Shipping, and Japanese offshore wind-related institutions and companies, who exchanged in-depth views.

Ulsan's industrial foundation and technology demonstration

Lee Han-woo presented Ulsan's world-class shipbuilding and offshore plant industry base and the potential of floating offshore wind power generation projects, emphasising the need to secure technology reliability through real-sea demonstration and link it to actual power generation projects.

Ulsan Technopark is currently participating as a co-research institution in the '15 megawatt-plus-class floating offshore wind mooring line load monitoring and load reduction device development' project led by ACE E&T, and is proceeding without delay on technology development and licensing preparations for real-sea demonstration.

Based on this, the technopark plans to actively pursue regional supply chain expansion by broadening opportunities for local shipbuilding and offshore plant companies to participate in connection with commercialisation projects by developers.

Lee Han-woo stated: "It is important to secure technology reliability through real-sea demonstration and build an industrial ecosystem where regional companies and developers can grow together. We will continue to pursue technology development, demonstration, and business linkages so that Ulsan's floating offshore wind industry can advance beyond domestic power generation projects into the global market."
