Ørsted is partnering with LX International to build an offshore wind installation support port in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, as it develops a 1.47GW offshore wind complex more than 70km offshore from Incheon. The company is accelerating expansion of supply chain infrastructure to advance the Incheon Offshore Wind 1 and 2 projects.

On August 19, Ørsted and LX International signed a memorandum of understanding to explore development and utilization of an offshore wind installation support port within Dangjin Port.

The core of this agreement is for both companies to jointly examine how to use the offshore wind installation support port that LX International is developing in Dangjin as a hub for aggregating, storing, and assembling equipment and materials needed for Ørsted's Incheon offshore wind project.

The two companies will share information related to port demand for the Incheon offshore wind project and strengthen cooperation on port development and operational methods. Through this, they plan to concretize the possibility of securing port infrastructure necessary for the project construction process, including stable receipt, storage, and assembly of offshore wind equipment.

This cooperation is particularly noteworthy in that it will build new infrastructure needed for the offshore wind industry by utilizing idle port sites in Dangjin. As offshore wind projects grow larger, securing ports capable of handling large equipment such as turbines and substructures has emerged as a key challenge for project advancement, and Dangjin Port is now being presented as a potential hub to support offshore wind projects in the West Sea region.

Ørsted and LX International expect that if the installation support port is developed as planned, it will contribute not only to local economic revitalization and smooth advancement of West Sea offshore wind projects, but also to enhancing the stability and competitiveness of Korea's offshore wind supply chain.

The Incheon Offshore Wind Project

Behind this cooperation lies the 1.47GW Incheon Offshore Wind project that Ørsted is pursuing.

Ørsted has obtained a power generation business license for a combined 1.47GW comprising Incheon Offshore Wind 1 (870MW) and Incheon Offshore Wind 2 (600MW). Currently, the company is conducting environmental impact assessment consultations, site surveys, basic design of the wind complex, and preparing for offshore wind auctions.

If development procedures proceed smoothly and a final investment decision (FID) is made, the project targets completion in the early 2030s.

Separately from the Dangjin installation support port, Ørsted is also examining port sites in the Incheon area to support operation and maintenance (O&M) of the power complex after the Incheon Offshore Wind project is completed. The plan is to use Dangjin Port during the construction phase and secure separate port infrastructure in the Incheon area during the operation phase, thereby establishing a port foundation across the entire project lifecycle.

The Dangjin offshore wind installation support port will be key infrastructure supporting successful execution of the 1.47GW Incheon Offshore Wind project."

He added: "Through cooperation with domestic partners like LX International who possess regional industrial foundations and port development capabilities, we will contribute not only to offshore wind complex development but also to stable construction of Korea's offshore wind supply chain and expansion of related infrastructure."
