South Korea's Ministry of Climate Energy and Environment and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries have jointly established integrated environmental assessment standards for offshore wind development for the first time. These standards will be applied throughout the entire process, from site selection to post-management operations.
The new framework standardizes marine environmental surveys, environmental impact assessment consultations, implementation of consultation outcomes, and post-project monitoring procedures. By establishing these unified standards, the government aims to increase project predictability and reduce uncertainties in the offshore wind development process.
The integrated assessment criteria are designed to simultaneously achieve two key objectives: conservation of marine ecosystems and securing public acceptance from local communities. The standardized procedures provide an institutional foundation that balances the need for renewable energy expansion with environmental protection and stakeholder engagement.
This coordinated approach between the two ministries represents a significant step toward streamlining offshore wind project approval processes while ensuring comprehensive environmental oversight and community consultation throughout all phases of development.
