Jeju Province has requested inclusion in the 12th Basic Power Supply and Demand Plan to connect offshore wind power from the Chuza area to the national power grid serving the Honam region. Governor Wi Sung-gon made the request while proposing that Jeju be designated as a floating offshore wind demonstration zone, highlighting the province's deep waters ranging from 50 to 100 meters, which are ideal for floating offshore wind farm development.
The provincial government is currently pursuing a "Offshore Wind Super Grid" project that aims to construct a 10-gigawatt-scale offshore wind power generation complex. This ambitious project is expected to generate annual sales of 4.2 trillion won and position Jeju as a leading hub for renewable energy production in South Korea.
The Jeju initiative is being coordinated with the government's West Coast Energy Superhighway project, which has a total investment of 7.9 trillion won. Both projects are working toward a common goal of establishing a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission network by 2030 to efficiently transport renewable energy across the country.
These interconnected projects represent a strategic effort to leverage Jeju's geographical advantages and abundant wind resources while contributing to South Korea's broader renewable energy transition and national grid modernization objectives.
