Despite being ideally positioned to support a 13 trillion won-scale offshore wind project near Yokji Island in Tongyeong, the port faces a critical window of opportunity. The process of applying for changes to the basic plan is expected to take 2 to 3 years, during which cargo volume and industrial ecosystems may shift to competing regions.
Samcheonpo New Port's strategic location near planned offshore wind farms in southern waters and its ample yard space make it optimal for component storage, assembly, and logistics operations. However, competing regions are moving faster to secure inclusion in national plans and develop their industrial ecosystems.
Industry experts warn that delays in infrastructure development and national plan approval could result in the loss of significant economic opportunities and industrial investment to other ports that are moving more quickly to capitalize on the growing offshore wind energy sector.
