Korean offshore wind sites: where do differences in capacity factor come from?

Net capacity factors (P50) at 78 Korean offshore wind projects range from 26.4% to 39.8%. Wake, the largest loss (median 11.3%), varies from project to project with almost no link to sea area, so projects with similar gross capacity factor can differ by up to 8.0 points on net.

Korean offshore wind sites: where do differences in capacity factor come from?

Net capacity factors (P50) across 78 Korean offshore wind projects range from 26.4% to 39.8%. Gross capacity factor follows wind speed and differs by sea area. Wake loss, the largest loss, varies from project to project with almost no link to sea area. Projects with a similar gross capacity factor can therefore end up as much as 8.0 points apart on net capacity factor.

1. Overview

This report compares the capacity factors of the 78 fixed-bottom projects in the September 2026 national snapshot of Engine ARA. The median gross capacity factor, before any losses, is 44.5%. After wake and all other losses, the median net capacity factor (P50) is 33.6%; half of the projects fall between 31.3% and 35.3%, and the full range runs from 26.4% to 39.8%. Losses between gross and net have a median of 25.4% (17.0% to 36.5%), and the largest single item is wake loss, with a median of 11.3%.

Capacity factor starts from the hub-height mean wind speed covered in the first insight. Engine ARA optimises a turbine layout for each project and applies a wake model to calculate wake between turbines within the project. The model also calculates wake from neighbouring projects that are operating, under construction or have won an auction, and from projects being developed alongside it by the same developer. It then applies availability, electrical, turbine performance, environmental and curtailment losses to obtain the net capacity factor. Net capacity factors in this report are P50 values.
