Order placed with PaxOcean, delivery in 2029, deployment in Taiwan and Asian offshore wind projects
Japan's NYK has placed an order for one Service Operation Vessel (SOV) to pursue the offshore wind market in Asia and the Pacific, including Taiwan.
NYK announced that it has ordered one SOV from PaxOcean Group to support the construction and maintenance of offshore wind power installations. The vessel is scheduled for delivery around 2029 and will be deployed in offshore wind projects in Taiwan and other parts of Asia and the Pacific.

The newbuild will be registered in Taiwan with a length of approximately 89.6 meters, a beam of 19.2 meters, and a design draft of approximately 5 meters. It will accommodate a maximum of 120 people on board. The vessel will be equipped with accommodation facilities for the long-term stay of construction and maintenance personnel at offshore wind farms, as well as cargo storage space.
The vessel will apply a Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) and Ulstein Design & Solutions' TWIN X-STERN hull form to enhance station-keeping and fuel efficiency. It will also be equipped with a motion-compensated gangway and crane that automatically correct the vessel's movement, enabling safe transfer of personnel and cargo to offshore wind turbines.
NYK has operated SOV business in Europe through its subsidiary Northern Offshore Group. This order represents a strategy to expand the operational experience accumulated in Europe to the high-growth potential markets of Asia and the Pacific.
Ship operations will involve IOVTEC, a Taiwan-based offshore wind company in which NYK invested in March of the previous year, and Hsin Chien Marine (HCM). The three parties plan to combine their experience in marine surveying, offshore wind operations and maintenance, and ship management to advance the business.
NYK views this SOV order as an opportunity to expand its business scope from maritime transport to offshore operations and intends to strengthen its participation in the offshore wind value chain.
