Korea needs new offshore wind zones 7x the size of Seoul to hit 2035 target

Climate Solutions and the Green Energy Strategy Institute (GESI) report that accommodating the 24 GW of competitive auction volume planned through 2035 would require 3,800 to 6,500 km² of new offshore wind development zones, with a base case of about 4,300 km², roughly 7.1 times the area of Seoul.

A research finding has shown that to achieve the government's offshore wind deployment target, new development zones equivalent to or larger than Seoul's area must be designated annually from 2031 onwards, and the project period from construction start to completion must be shortened.

Climate Solutions and the Green Energy Strategy Institute (GESI) released this analysis in a report titled "Study on Marine Space Area Required to Achieve Offshore Wind Deployment Targets" on October 14.

According to the report, to accommodate the 24GW of competitive auction volumes planned by the government through 2035, approximately 3,800 to 6,500 square kilometers of new development zones must be designated. Under the baseline scenario, approximately 4,300 square kilometers, or about 7.1 times Seoul's area, is estimated to be required.
