IS Dongseo has officially joined the Global Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter Partnership (GPML), for which the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the secretariat. Through cooperation with the international framework, the company aims to strengthen international collaboration in resource circulation, including the reduction of plastic pollution and marine litter, and to enhance the sustainability of its circular economy and renewable energy projects.

IS Dongseo completed the GPML membership process under UNEP and announced on Sept. 30 that it will participate in international efforts to reduce plastics and protect the marine environment.

GPML is a multi-stakeholder partnership established following the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). Government agencies, companies, international organizations and research institutions from various countries participate in sharing knowledge and cooperation methods in resource circulation, including plastic reduction, reuse and recycling.

Building a circular economy value chain

Beyond its existing construction, environment and manufacturing operations, IS Dongseo has built a resource circulation value chain encompassing waste battery recycling, construction waste treatment, and waste intermediate processing and energy conversion.

With this GPML membership, the company plans to strengthen its circular economy business, which converts waste into new resources.

Offshore wind and marine protection

Renewable energy projects linked to marine environmental protection are taking concrete shape. IS Dongseo is advancing a 340 megawatt offshore wind power project in waters near Yokji-do off Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do. Following acquisition of an Electricity Business Licence in 2025, the company is currently proceeding with follow-up procedures including environmental impact assessment. Given the nature of the business, which uses marine space, the company is developing marine ecosystem impact monitoring and environmental conservation measures.

In-house resource circulation efforts continue. IS Dongseo has conducted waste reduction campaigns for two consecutive years, upcycling waste plastic collected by employees and construction site waste tarps into eco-friendly umbrellas distributed to local communities.

An IS Dongseo official said, "We made the decision to join GPML recognizing the importance of responding to environmental issues. We will continue to work with the international community on plastic reduction and resource circulation activities."
