Boryeong Mayor Um Seung-yong visited South Chungcheong Province to address key issues that will reshape the city's future industries and tourism landscape. His proposals included stable implementation of energy transition projects, attracting the integrated headquarters of Genco to South Chungcheong, and globalizing the Boryeong Mud Festival, with a call for the province and city to build a joint front and deliver tangible results.

On the 15th, Mayor Um met with South Chungcheong Governor Park Su-hyun at the provincial government office and explained major initiatives being pursued by Boryeong, requesting administrative and financial support from the province.

He first raised energy transition projects, including solar and offshore wind integrated zones. Mayor Um's assessment was that for Boryeong to advance from its existing role in national power generation to become a city centered on renewable energy, policy support from South Chungcheong must be in place.

He also emphasized that South Chungcheong and Boryeong must join forces in attracting the Genco integrated headquarters. His reasoning was that South Chungcheong has sufficient grounds for the bid, having been a core power production site that has supported the nation's power industry for decades and currently serving as the site where energy transition is underway.

Governor Park responded by thanking Boryeong citizens for their unified will on attracting the integrated headquarters to the province, saying "the citizens' collective resolve feels as solid as a rock."

Culture and tourism linkage

In the culture and tourism sector, a proposal was presented to connect the 2027 World Youth Conference with the Boryeong Mud Festival, which will mark its 30th anniversary, as a single global content offering.

Mayor Um explained that if a linked program were created allowing domestic and international youth participating in the World Youth Conference to enjoy the Boryeong Mud Festival together, the festival's international recognition could be significantly elevated. The vision is to bundle the two events as content experienced while staying in Boryeong, thereby expanding the festival's reach to young people worldwide.

Governor Park stated, "We plan to connect the World Youth Conference with each region in South Chungcheong and pursue programs that highlight regional characteristics. We will actively review how the Boryeong Mud Festival's 30th anniversary and the World Youth Conference can be successfully linked."

Mayor Um said, "Energy transition and the cultivation of cultural content are tasks directly linked not only to Boryeong's future but also to balanced development across South Chungcheong as a whole. We will work closely with South Chungcheong Province to ensure that the issues we have raised lead to concrete results."
