Korea Western Power, Vuna Energy, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have signed a joint development agreement for the 500MW Taean offshore wind project, targeting completion by 2030.
The project will leverage existing infrastructure from the decommissioned Taean Coal Power Plant Unit 1, including transmission systems and port facilities. This approach is expected to significantly reduce development costs while accelerating the project timeline.
Beyond infrastructure utilization, the three partners are committed to implementing a just transition strategy for workers previously employed in coal-fired power generation. The initiative includes retraining and education programs to facilitate the workforce's transition into the offshore wind energy sector.
This joint venture represents a comprehensive approach to South Korea's energy transition, combining economic efficiency with social responsibility as the country moves away from coal-based power generation toward renewable energy sources.
